Tesco offers four different pet insurance policies. Their Accident & Injury and Standard policies provide cover for 12 months from the date treatment started, or until you've reached the vet fee limit, as long as your policy is renewed, there's no break in cover and your premiums are up-to-date.

With Tesco's Extra pet insurance policy, cover lasts until the vet fee limit is reached for each accident or illness. The vet fee limit for Premier policies is per year and reinstated annually, provided you renew your policy and keep your premiums up to date.

Other things to consider

Changes to your premium

There are several factors that will affect the cost of your insurance premium when you first take out your pet insurance policy. These include:

  • Tick Icon

Age: younger pets typically have lower premiums.

  • Tick Icon

Breed: certain breeds are more prone to specific health conditions, which can affect the cost.

  • Tick Icon

Location: vet costs can vary by region.

  • Tick Icon

Coverage level: higher coverage plans naturally come with a higher premium.

Your limit will be reinstated each year, as long as you renew your policy and there’s no break in cover. Tesco Bank may choose not to renew a policy, if they do, they will let you know in advance of your renewal date.

Understanding insurance excess

When you get a quote for pet insurance with Tesco Bank you’ll be asked to choose a fixed excess amount, which you’ll need to pay if you make a vet fee claim.

You can choose from £60, £120 or £200. If you choose a higher excess, you’ll pay more when you claim, but it will reduce your premium.

The fixed excess amount will be paid in each policy period for each illness or accident.

Percentage excesses

Chosen Additional Excess, also known as co-payment, cost sharing or co-insurance, is a percentage you choose to pay on all the remaining vet bills after the fixed excess is deducted. The percentage excess depends on the age of your pet.

Other excesses

If your pet needs to be treated by a referral vet, and you choose a referral vet from outside our network and it's not for emergency treatment, you will need to pay £200 of the referral vet bill yourself. This amount is in addition to your policy excesses above.

If your pet causes damage to another person's property you’ll need to pay the first £250 of compensation or costs awarded by a court.

FAQs

  • What types of policies does Tesco Bank offer?

Tesco Bank offers three types of insurance policies, with annual vet fee cover ranging from £3,000 to £10,000. These policies are available for both cats and dogs.

  • Does Tesco Bank cover pre-existing conditions?

No, Tesco Bank does not provide cover for pre-existing conditions.

  • Do I need to pay an excess when I make a claim?

Yes, you will need to pay a fixed excess when you make a claim for vet fees. You can choose the amount when you take out your policy (£60, £120, or £200). Additionally, you can opt to pay a percentage of the vet bill, which will reduce the premium you pay. The higher your excess, the more you’ll contribute towards a claim. For claims where your pet is aged 8 or over, you’ll need to pay your chosen fixed excess and 20% of the remaining costs. There are some claims where no excess is required.

  • I have an old cat or dog, can I get insured?

Yes, older pets can be insured. For cats and dogs over the age of 8, you will need to pay 20% of each remaining vet bill yourself after your fixed excess has been deducted.

  • Are dental fees covered?

All of Tesco Bank’s policies include cover for dental fees due to an accident. Their Standard and Extra policies also cover dental treatment if it’s needed due to an underlying issue. Premier policies provide cover for treatment due to accidents, illnesses, and all other dental treatments, provided your pet has a yearly check-up and the recommended treatment.

  • Are vaccinations included?

Vaccinations are not covered by Tesco Bank pet insurance, as they are considered routine costs rather than unexpected expenses.

  • What happens after I make a claim?

Once you make a claim, Tesco Bank begins processing it straight away. Tesco can pay your vet directly if they’re happy to accept direct payments and will notify you once the payment has been made.
